1:43
good morning how are you this morning doing well good morning Dan it's good to
1:51
see you I wasn't expecting you to be sitting there nice to see you well this morning as you can see we're
1:59
gonna take the Lord's Supper and I don't know if you guys can hear that I'm a little hot on the mic just a little a
2:05
little hot it's kind of getting a little feedback but we're gonna we're gonna observe the Lord's Supper and so what
2:11
I'd like to do this morning is actually preach from the Word of God about the Lord's Supper and so I want to talk to
2:17
you about this wonderful time of fellowship where the body of Christ is supposed to come together in unison and
2:24
enjoy and remember and recognize and reflect on our own need for Christ and
2:32
what he's done for us so but there's a lot of text in the Bible about this and there's some background we need to have
2:38
in order to understand some of the New Testament teaching on the Lord's Supper so let's start with the word of Prayer
2:45
and then we're gonna we're gonna if you would open your Bibles with me to Exodus chapter 12 so we're gonna start there
2:51
that may seem weird you'll be like how is the Lord's Supper in the Old Testament I'll show you why we need to
2:56
go there first but let's pray together Heavenly Father you are an amazing God
3:04
you are a God of great wonder you are a God of great power
3:10
father you are a God who has created everything that we see have created us
3:15
the entire universe was created by you the all and majesty of what you've done
3:22
is amazing father hopefully we never we
3:28
never get tired of glorifying you and praising you for who you are and the God
3:34
beyond your creation and just a magnificent works you've done it's amazing how you've worked through
3:40
your son Jesus in Redemption and even
3:45
before the foundation of the world God you caused the plan of redemption to to
3:51
start and it continues to work today and father everyone here who has been
3:58
converted and who is believed and trusted in Jesus has done the done so because you've guided them to do it
4:05
you've caused us to believe and you've brought forth faith and he brought Jesus
4:11
that he might redeem and purchased us away from our sinfulness free us from
4:16
the bondage and the slavery of sin God let us reflect on that in the Lord's Supper today what Jesus has done he's
4:25
asked us to do these things in remembrance of him so calls us to remember father ask that
4:32
you bless each one has come today that you even now start to help us to remove and to repent of and to reflect on any
4:41
sin that's in our heart any division that's in our heart and God that you
4:47
will weed that out you will help us to repent and move forward reconcile God we
4:54
love you we praise you blessed this time we pray in the name of Jesus amen
4:59
okay Exodus chapter 12 so in the Christian Church and and most of you are
5:06
probably aware of this if you've been in the church any any period of time at all there are two sacraments or two
5:12
ordinances that we keep regularly baptism you're familiar with baptism and
5:18
then the Lord's Supper why do we only keep two in in the mainstream Protestant
5:24
denominations the ones that come out of a kind of a Puritan Reformation heritage because these are the two that the LORD
5:31
commanded in the Word of God so we keep those two now baptism is a once and
5:37
forever thing you want your once you were saved the Lord puts His Holy Spirit
5:43
into you that's a spiritual baptism and then as a sign of that as a profession
5:49
of faith publicly we get baptized in water don't we to identify with his
5:54
death let me read to you a couple of passages here so that you can hear the Lord's command and then you can also
6:00
hear a little bit about what baptism is so in Matthew 28 starting in verse 19
6:07
this is the great commit last two verses of the book of Matthew go therefore and make disciples of all
6:13
the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit so that's verse 19 notice
6:21
that we are to make disciples of the whole world and then we are to baptize
6:27
them in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit okay so that's the the Lord's command in the book of Romans
6:33
chapter 6 starting in verse 1 it says this what shall we say then shall we
6:38
continue in sin that grace may abound certainly not how shall we who died to
6:43
sin live any longer in it or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized
6:49
into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death therefore we were buried with him
6:54
through baptism into death that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also
7:00
should walk in newness of life for if we have been united together in the likeness of his death certainly we
7:07
also shall be we shall be in the likeness of his resurrection knowing
7:12
this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away with that we should no longer be
7:20
slaves of sin for he who has died has freed us from sin so baptism has this
7:29
pictorial effect there's a spiritual regeneration that takes place at
7:34
conversion as God places his Holy Spirit inside of you and then we are water
7:40
baptized to show as an outward sim outward symbolism of our identification
7:45
with the death of Christ and the rising up from the dead with Christ in the
7:51
newness of life okay so that's baptism now we could do a much more full study
7:56
in the scripture on baptism but today it's the day to talk about the Lord's Supper so the Lord's Supper is a thing
8:03
that we keep perpetually in the church and what do I mean by that we keep it as often now different churches have
8:10
different methodologies you may know this you may not some churches keep the Lord's Supper every single time they
8:16
meet every single week they have it as part of their regular service okay some
8:21
just do it once a month other churches do it once a quarter it there there's no
8:26
prescription for how often you should do it the Lord just said as often as you do
8:32
it do it in remembrance okay so there is no prescription that's why the church is kind of land on different some feel it's
8:39
it needs to be done all the time others feel like once in a while is enough and again as a church we can
8:45
decide how it's done here in our local assembly but we are to keep it and it's
8:50
perpetual okay so that is an important thing it's amazing to me too though if you hear sermons how many of you if you
8:57
think about it if you hear sermons or teaching have heard way more sermons and teaching on baptism than you have on the
9:03
Lord's Supper be honest that's it's pretty pretty true isn't it and I think
9:09
part of the reason for that is baptism is a thing that's coupled with conversion right so as new people get
9:16
saved so we see it a lot more often or should be seeing it a lot more often and I I think maybe that's one of the
9:22
reasons that it gets emphasized over the other now in a healthy Church where they're actively taking the Lord's
9:28
Supper hopefully whoever's administering this you know a pastor or a brother in Christ someone who is administering the Lord's
9:34
Supper to the to the congregation is taking the time to walk through at least
9:40
at a high level some of what the Lord's Supper is and the warnings and commands associated with it we will do that today
9:48
so the this is this is a great time to reflect and and as I prayed you probably
9:54
heard I think even now knowing that this is coming you ought to start to reflect on your own person your own character
10:01
your own inward thoughts and I'll show you why in the scripture we're commanded to do that it's going to be towards the
10:07
end of the sermon but it's important and then as we move into the into the actual time of observance we'll take a moment
10:14
to examine ourselves and be sure that we don't take this in an unworthy manner that's a it's a very big deal from the
10:21
scripture so in our heritage I guess in
10:28
the in the Christian Church in America here today we come out of a line of
10:33
people that we let's just call them Puritans or Puritan reformers a lot of our churches come out
10:40
of this lineage and they had two main things that they focused on primarily
10:45
that were very important to them for having a healthy church and a healthy Christian community the first is
10:53
preaching the Word of God and yes it means preaching like this corporately doing it well dividing the word rightly
11:01
that kind of thing but it also means even in our lives you know speaking forth truth in our lives and preaching
11:08
the proper administration of the word in the body of Christ and to the lost and the main one of the main reasons they
11:15
thought this was important was this is the mechanism God uses to convert souls if you're not preaching the word well
11:22
you're probably not converting souls well because it's not our fancy
11:27
philosophy it's not you you hear how beautiful I speak how its flowering no
11:32
it has nothing to do with the man it's not about me or you or how we say it or
11:39
how we go about it it's the Word of God that brings life this can transform a
11:45
heart this can actually do the work that you and I can't we just have to be
11:51
willing messengers people willing to pick it up and speak it forth and live it out so that people can hear it okay
11:59
that that's what we're to do and that's the Puritans took this very seriously the preaching of the word the second
12:05
thing they were very very serious about was the proper administration of two
12:12
sacraments the two we've just discussed baptism and the Lord's Supper the proper
12:18
administration of these will create a healthy Church first of all the people
12:23
in the church the people here should be if particularly if they're members now
12:29
again these are public worship services and most churches are open to the public you can be here and be an unbeliever
12:35
that's just fine hear the word of God but if you are to be plugged in and part of the body you are to be a baptized
12:42
member of the body of Christ okay baptized because
12:48
baptism doesn't save you we know that not not the water baptism anyway the spiritual one
12:54
absolutely the water would know baptism is a symbol of your faith and you do
13:00
that to express your conversion to other people but you the Puritans and a lot of
13:06
church leaders today take this very seriously if you're not a baptized member of the body they many churches
13:12
don't want you taking communion at all and again recognize a baptized member of
13:17
the body I didn't say you had to be a part of this local church necessarily to do that but you do have to be a
13:23
converted Christian okay so that was big to the Reformers and then the continual
13:28
taking of the Lord's Supper the continual consumption of this and we'll
13:34
get to the text in a minute all of the unity in the body in in Christ is drawn
13:41
here and let me tell you and and you guys probably know this the church can't
13:47
be healthy without a unified body here Jesus made the statement in another
13:53
context that a house divided against itself can't stand a local assembly
13:58
can't stand firm unless you're all in unison and unified on the Word of God
14:05
the gospel who Christ is and what he's done and then our part in the body of
14:10
Christ and the Lord's Supper draws you into that okay it's a very very critical
14:17
thing in the and the Reformers the Puritan reformers were very very serious about this and I think in the church
14:24
you're seeing it today you'll notice a lot of churches are now calling themselves reformed churches and
14:30
what they're really trying to say is their doctrine and ideals and models follow what the Puritans were doing
14:36
which they also and you know I believe two are dating back to the apostolic
14:41
traditions that the Bible talks about making membership in the body of Christ
14:46
a serious thing again okay let I'll stop her answering because there's more text
14:52
and maybe I'll do some of that later let's let's look at this Exodus 12 so in order to understand the Lord's Supper we
14:59
need to understand how he how he did this with the disciples they
15:04
are actually partaking in the upper room the night when he was betrayed the night when he gets Cruces you know he was
15:10
crucified the next morning you know he goes out in the garden and he gets he gets betrayed that night there in the
15:16
Upper Room celebrating the Passover meal this is what the Jews do they were
15:21
commanded perpetually to keep this year after year after year and that's what we're gonna look at next siddhis 12 this
15:27
is its institution we need a little bit of this background in order to understand some of the things Jesus is
15:34
saying and the things that are happening in the Lord's Supper in that Upper Room okay so let's look at Exodus 12 we're
15:41
gonna go through about the first 27 verses and I'm only gonna highlight a few points here I'm not asleep on now
15:53
the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying this month shall be your beginning of months it shall be the
15:59
first month of the year to you something to point out there to you is the normal
16:04
month for Jews the normal beginning of months or the thing they call Rosh Hashanah is is in September ish
16:11
timeframe normally but this the Lord is telling Moses you're gonna make this the
16:17
beginning of your months and the thing he's telling him is this sacred calendar that comes into play alongside the civil
16:24
calendar that they already have is in the spring and you guys know this
16:29
because the thing that the Bible calls the Passover we've returned in the modern church as Easter okay so that the
16:36
celebration of Christ's death burial and resurrection we call that Easter in the Christian Church that is the Passover
16:43
from the Bible okay Passover unleavened bread and first fruits the the first three feasts of the Lord from Leviticus
16:49
26 well there's more to say about that but let's keep going I want you understand why he's telling them to do
16:55
this here think in your mind too about the idea of the springtime and new life
17:01
springing up think about that idea of new life in the spring every spring
17:06
after the winter aren't you excited to see the grass and the trees and the flowers and everything come come back
17:12
into bloom and come to life again all been dead and dormant for the whole winter particularly up here in the north
17:18
you know in in in the Midwest I guess we could call it here in Ohio we have a pretty decent winter and then we have a
17:25
spring and everything comes back to life well Israel experiences the same thing you know so this is this is an important
17:32
time of renewal and new life and you're supposed to get that idea from this all
17:37
right verse 3 speak to all the congregation of Israel saying on the 10th of this month every man shall take
17:43
for himself a lamb according to the house of his father a lamb for a household ok now I realize already that
17:51
I've jumped over a big thing that let me just back up for one second this is in
17:58
the book of Exodus and so I just presumed you understood the exodus of Egypt where God sent Moses to take his
18:05
people out of the land of Egypt I shouldn't probably presume so I may spend a second here but God sent Moses
18:12
and to Egypt to take the children of Israel out of Egypt right and they were headed to Mount Sinai when they exit
18:18
well in the process of this the Lord decides to send ten plagues against
18:24
Egypt to crush them not like it just came to his mind at that moment but you get the point he determines to send the
18:31
ten plagues against Egypt the final one is where he's going to kill the firstborn in Egypt and so the whole
18:38
model of this Passover and you'll you'll see it in the text as we go is to mark out the Jewish people the Israelites who
18:46
God is going to protect under his blood covenant he's going to protect them
18:52
while he slaughters the firstborn of Egypt and so that's the background historical narrative that we didn't read
18:59
up to this point in Exodus I presumed you knew it but better to be safe than
19:04
sorry so here in verse 3 we have this thing
19:09
where they're told to take a lamb and you guys may have heard the stories over the years as you heard people preach but
19:15
the Jews wouldn't would not only take that lamb on the 10th but many of them would take it into their homes and they
19:21
would actually keep it much like a pet because there were a couple things they had to do they needed to fully inspect
19:27
this lamb to make sure it was spotless which meaning which which in Jewish rabbinical
19:32
speak means it couldn't have more than three black hairs on a white sheep three
19:39
of its hairs if they even found three it was couldn't be considered to be pure
19:44
okay but they would take this lamb into their homes and they would keep it as a
19:49
pet from the tenth and you'll see in the text to the fourteenth and on the tenth
19:54
I want you to get the picture in your mind as we move to the Lord's Supper of the final week of the Lord's life do you
20:01
remember what took place on the 10th the first day of the week as Jesus was
20:06
coming into Jerusalem let's look at a little bit of text here Luke 19 and you
20:12
can really write this down or turn to it I'm just gonna read a quick passage Luke 19 37 through 40 then as he was now
20:20
drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise
20:26
God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen saying blessed is the king who comes in the name of the
20:32
Lord peace in heaven and glory in the highest and some of the Pharisees called to him from the crowd teacher rebuke your
20:39
disciples but he answered and said to them I tell you that if these should keep silent the stones would immediately
20:47
cry out so one of the main factors that you ought to understand about this
20:52
Passover here is that while it had a physical implementation here with lambs
20:59
and blood from lambs here in Exodus this
21:04
is a picture of the Messiah who would come and he would actually shed his own blood to cover sin and again there's a
21:12
lot of the Bible talks about this but the Passover is about Jesus and Jesus on
21:18
the tenth on the first day of the week which was the tenth of that week he fulfills this exactly he came in let me
21:26
read you another verse just to get so you get the feel of the prophecies being fulfilled when he did that this is from
21:33
Zechariah 9 this is a prophecy that predicted Jesus rejoice greatly o daughter of Zion shout o daughter of
21:40
Jerusalem be hold your king is coming to you he is just and having salvation lowly and
21:46
riding on a donkey a Colt the foal of a donkey you're familiar with the verse
21:52
Jesus fulfilled many many prophecies as he rode into Jerusalem on that tenth day
21:58
of NIH's on he's fulfilling this Passover prophecy here but he's also
22:03
fulfilling Zechariah there and let me read you one more that you may not often think of the Book of Daniel chapter 9
22:10
the 70 weeks prophecy from the end of the book of Daniel chapter 9 listen to
22:16
this 70 weeks are determined for your people and for your holy holy city to finish the transgression to make an end
22:23
of sins to make reconciliation for iniquity to bring in everlasting righteousness to seal up vision and
22:30
prophecy and to anoint the most holy know therefore and understand that from
22:35
the going forth of the command to restore and build jerusalem until
22:40
messiah the prince there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks the street
22:47
shall be built again and the wall even in troublous times and after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off
22:53
but not for himself and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary the end of it
23:00
shall be with a flood until the end of the war desolations are determined I'll
23:06
stop there there's more to it but you saw the part about Jesus there right you saw the part about the Messiah himself
23:13
will show up from the command to rebuild until Messiah the Prince which is the
23:18
day he's announced the tenth of NIH's on and we owe a great deal to a man named
23:24
Sir Robert Anderson Freddy lived in the 1800s he he was he was a Scotland Yard
23:31
director and he was also an amateur astronomer but he was a huge Bible I
23:37
don't know if we maybe would today we'd call him a nerd he's he's a Bible he's a Bible guy he went into the the records
23:45
the astronomical records that they had in the history that he had available to him at the time and he calculated the
23:51
exact timing between the decree from from Cyrus sorry the decree from
23:57
art exerts ease to the time when the Messiah would come in on that day we call the triumphal entry and that it
24:05
works out exactly those 69 weeks of years those are 69 weeks of years
24:10
exactly to that day man the fulfillment of that prophecy right there has caused
24:18
so many people to late date the Book of Daniel believing that the prophet Daniel
24:23
didn't write it because of the precision and the accuracy of these prophecies now
24:29
of course you and I know better we know it was written by Daniel first of all Jesus affirms Daniel as the writer in
24:35
the New Testament if you have faith in Jesus you'll trust Daniel in his word because his word is true it's in the
24:41
Bible and Jesus affirmed it in the New Testament don't be don't be thrown off
24:46
by all that late dating nonsense that is a very specific prophecy fulfilled in
24:52
this coming of Jesus there and it's all it's all wrapped up in the commands
24:57
given here for the Passover and the coming of the Messiah Jesus and again as
25:04
you know there are seven feasts of Israel right if you're familiar with Leviticus 23 there's Passover unleavened
25:09
bread and first fruits Jesus fulfilled those at his first coming there is the feast of weeks or we call it Pentecost
25:16
which honestly is the great period of time of the church age between the two and then there's the Feast of Trumpets
25:22
the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles that will happen and be part
25:28
of the end time scenario when Jesus returns again the Feast of Trumpets most likely to me is and again this is all
25:35
future so it's difficult for me to interpret it exactly but I believe that's the rapture of the church the Day
25:41
of Atonement is his judgment we see it spelled out in the book of Revelation that wrath of God the report out and
25:47
then Tabernacles is obviously the coming kingdom when the Lord will reign here on the earth there are two parts a first
25:54
coming and a second coming and they're all modeled in these feasts so Passover
25:59
here starts this is the first one and this is this is important for us to understand these details that's why I'm
26:05
tying them into the New Testament so you get the back ground and I know I'm moving quickly and at some stage Lord willing we'll go
26:13
through the details of these and more very you know fine grained detail but let's keep going in this text and if the
26:19
household is too small for the lamb let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the
26:25
persons according to each man's need you shall make your count for the lamb okay
26:31
and your lamb shall be without blemish a male of the first year you may take it
26:36
from the sheep or from the goats now this this verse here did you see what it says a lamb without blemish
26:43
who is the sinless Lamb of God without blemish Jesus you see the figuring of
26:50
Jesus to come I would love to preach to you right now from Hebrews 8 through 10
26:55
and talk to you about the great high priest and the putting away of the bulls and the goats and all of their blood and
27:00
the blood of Jesus perfecting but let's let's continue with this I don't wanna preach a second sermon on top of it it
27:07
would be confusing verse 6 now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the
27:12
same month then the whole Assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at Twilight now understand folks that
27:20
14th day of NIH's on and again I'm using the name of the month I know the text doesn't say that but that's the month
27:27
we're talking about that 14th day that's the day Jesus was crucified and and I
27:33
have a whole study with with slideshow and everything detailing from the New Testament and
27:40
using these Old Testament references exactly how Jesus fulfills this he is
27:46
set apart as the Messiah and even the very rocks would cry out if the people held their tongues and then on the 14th
27:52
he dies for sin on a cross that's this Lamb figured here okay verse 7 and they
28:00
shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorpost and on the lentils of the houses where they eat it then
28:06
they shall eat the flesh on that night roasted and fire with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it
28:11
do not eat it raw nor boiled at all with water but roasted and fire its head with its legs and its entrails you shall let
28:18
none of it remain morning and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire and
28:24
thus you shall eat it with a belt on your waist your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand so you shall eat
28:30
it in haste it is the Lord's Passover notice that word Lord there I want to
28:36
teach you something about your Bible you may not know you some of you might some of you may not be aware anytime you see
28:43
the word Lord like that and it's in all capital letters it doesn't actually say Lord in the text what it says is Yahweh
28:52
the name of God it's the four-letter name of God every time you see Lord in
28:59
all capital letters anywhere in the Old Testament it is translating the name of
29:04
God so actually what it should say what you should read there it is Yahweh's
29:10
Passover okay and I know to us it means the same thing but understand God is
29:17
putting his name in the Word of God here in the Christian church we don't understand it as much because it's all
29:23
been obfuscated away from seeing it in the text but this is the name of God you
29:29
need to understand what's being said here okay little lesson sorry a little rabbit
29:35
trail verse 12 for I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and will strike all the firstborn in the land of
29:41
Egypt both man and beast and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment I am the Lord now the blood
29:48
shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are and when I see the Blood I will pass over you and the plague shall
29:54
not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt so this day shall be to you a memorial and you shall
30:00
keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations you shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting
30:07
ordinance seven days you shall eat unleavened bread on the first day you shall remove
30:13
leaven from your houses for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day that person shall be cut
30:20
off from Israel okay so we see two things here there is there is this
30:28
everlasting perpetual keeping of the Passover ceremony with the Israelites they are commanded
30:36
year by year to keep this thing that ought to start speaking to you a little
30:42
bit you ought to start recognizing that when Jesus Institute's the Lord's Supper in the New Testament it's coming from
30:48
this heritage this history the Jewish people sitting around that Lord's table
30:54
all of his disciples that are there they know this better than you and I will
30:59
probably ever know it as far as you know the details every word in here they were
31:05
commanded to live by the law of God these details they had to observe them
31:10
and keep particular about them notice here if they are if they consumed
31:15
unleavened bread that's that's bread with yeast in it so you know how you buy
31:20
a loaf of bread at the store and it's nice and puffy and soft well if you put leaven or yeast the stuff that causes
31:26
that puffing thing up in there and you eat it during the first seven days of this feast the Lord will cut you off
31:32
from Israel that's what they that's what they knew so I've heard and again we'll
31:38
get to it as we get into the New Testament text but I've heard many people question you know the Lord
31:43
doesn't say unleavened bread or not you better understand the background understand the history here no Jew would
31:50
dare eat unleavened bread during the Passover meal there are sorry leavened
31:56
bread during the Passover meal they are commanded to eat unleavened bread okay
32:02
and then they are to keep this as a perpetual feast now we could go on there's more to this but let's turn to
32:07
the New Testament if you would turn over to the to the to Luke chapter 22 with me
32:13
please Luke 22 let's turn over here in
32:20
the New Testament and I want you to see this text here if I can get to the spra
32:27
starting verse sorry my pages are Luke 22 we're gonna start in verse 7 now
32:34
listen to this text here then came the day of unleavened bread when the
32:40
Passover must be killed and he sent Peter and John sang go and prepare the Passover for us that we may eat
32:46
so they said to him where do you want us to prepare and he said to them behold when you have entered the city a man
32:52
will meet you carrying a pitcher of water follow him into the house which he enters then you shall say to the master
32:59
of the house the teacher says to you where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples then he
33:06
will show you a large furnished upper room there make ready so they went and found it just as he had said to them and
33:13
they prepared the Passover notice this they're preparing for that upper room feast and it's the Passover meal being
33:20
prepared when the hour had come verse 14 he sat down in the Twelve Apostles with
33:25
him then he said to them with fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer for I
33:32
say to you I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God then he took the cup and gave thanks
33:38
and said take this and divide it among yourselves for I say to you I will not
33:43
drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes and he took bread gave thanks and broke it and gave it to
33:51
them saying this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of
33:56
me likewise he also took the cup apt after supper saying this cup is the New
34:01
Covenant in my blood which is shed for you and I could continue on from there
34:08
and talk about Judas's betrayal but we mentioned that in a sermon a few weeks ago look at the Lord's look at what the
34:16
Lord does here during this passover meal he takes this passover meal which they had celebrated every year of their lives
34:24
every year without fail they would celebrate this by command and all sorts
34:31
of things associated with it nobody in that room is unfamiliar with the process
34:36
of the passover meal but look what the Lord does he starts to transform it
34:42
slightly and he starts to prefigure some things that they're celebrating that
34:49
they don't even fully understand yet look look at the first thing he says is
34:54
he says I had a longing and desire to eat this Passover you know he's got a longing
35:00
desire to celebrate this Passover why do you think that is think to yourself for
35:06
a second why do you think that is this is the very day as far as calendar days
35:12
go let me give you another little lesson in case you don't know we in the Western
35:18
world most of the time divide our day and night at midnight right we put the
35:23
division of a day like the date on the calendar happens at midnight okay in the
35:29
Jewish world it doesn't work that way there night and day ends at 6:00 p.m. it's called the even it's referenced
35:37
many times in the scripture and all of the stuff dealing with the Passover and all of the feasts of the Lord all just
35:44
presuppose this understanding of how a day-and-night works when they celebrated
35:51
that Passover meal in the Upper Room that evening it was a new calendar day
35:57
because the day starts in the evening 6:00 p.m. a new calendar day now from
36:04
the way you and I look at life it's the same physical day in that we got up that morning we went to work we did
36:11
everything we would do at home and then we went somewhere to have a feast and a fellowship with people - to you and I
36:17
they they worked and lived very much the same way we do you get up in the morning you do your stuff and in the evening but
36:24
the calendar has flipped over to the next day and that's that's one of the
36:29
things I think this confuses Bible scholars many times when they look at these things they don't realize that an
36:34
actual calendar day has transpired when they started this and so it's it's a key
36:40
jesus is fulfilling this on the very calendar day so he or he start he's
36:48
leading this on the very calendar day that he will be crucified he is to be
36:53
crucified the very next morning that's something you need to put in your mind and understand his longing and desire is
37:01
not only is this going to be his last Passover before the kingdom comes he
37:07
himself is going to be the Passover lamb on that very day
37:13
this is critical to understand folks when you read these text that you know
37:18
the history of Passover you know what that says so that you can understand what he's doing here
37:26
so Jesus also says here he will not eat the Passover again until it is fulfilled
37:32
in the kingdom notice that from the time he he finishes this Passover supper with
37:38
the disciples he dies on the cross the next morning same calendar day but the next morning he will never take that
37:45
again until the kingdom when he returns and sets up his kingdom on earth with us
37:52
that is the Feast of Tabernacles by the way that is an unbelievable time that is
37:59
yet future and coming now I want you to look at a couple other things this is what I meant earlier by the Jews didn't
38:05
necessarily know everything they were celebrating here so during a Passover
38:10
Seder and we're not going to do a full rundown because believe me I have an entire teaching on that and it's a it's
38:16
I was gonna say amazing but I want to act pompous that's not what I meant it's good to understand what they do so that
38:22
you can see some of the features in the text but let me give you just an insight here they have four cups that they take
38:30
now sometimes it's just one cup that they take four separate times drinks out of this cup of wine during this process
38:36
the first cup the Jews call sanctification and and their phrase I'm
38:42
gonna do it in English not Hebrew I will bring you out that's cup 1 cup 2 is called plagues
38:49
okay I will free you from being slaves that's the Hebrew that they that they
38:54
say third cup redemption or salvation I will redeem you fourth cup completion I
39:01
will take you as my own people so the Jews if you ever watch or observe a
39:08
Passover Seder or read about it you'll see that they do all of this in the context of the Passover implemented in
39:15
Egypt but I want you to see what Jesus does here at least from a textual
39:21
standpoint now he may have very well observed all four of those just like they always do but the text only tells
39:26
about to cup number one Jesus Jesus
39:31
takes he takes the first cup he gives thanks then he tells his disciples to divide it among themselves as he will
39:37
not partake until the kingdom of God comes this is him prefiguring sanctification
39:43
that is going to come through the conversion of these people through his blood that he's going to sacrifice the
39:50
next morning this wine prefigures the blood of Christ and we're gonna
39:56
celebrate that part of it here in a minute that first cup he is about to die on the cross and he is going to bring
40:03
Salva sanctification to these people through the work he's about to do okay
40:09
he skips right over the second cup in the text did you note that there's no
40:15
second cup here and we know that because the next cup that's mentioned he says that's the cup after dinner and in the
40:22
Passover Seder the after-dinner cup is the third cup the second cup is skipped why it's called plagues this is when God
40:29
pours his judgment out now when does that happen well that's an in times
40:36
thing as far as if we're talking in the model of the Feast of the Lord that's the day of atonement that is the the
40:41
stuff in Revelation that is really hard to read because God brings wrath to the
40:48
earth okay Jesus skips right over that at this point now you may also be able
40:53
to take that from a personal standpoint that God will judge you if you don't
40:59
repent you know I guess you could kind of take it that way but I want you to see the grand scope here okay in the
41:06
next one if the third cup that he takes after dinner this is Christ promising
41:12
them Redemption and salvation through his blood and this is the one that he tells them to take this is important the
41:22
fourth cup completion it's not completed yet Christ has not yet died on the cross
41:28
neither has he returned and set up the final kingdom again the Jews do not put
41:34
it in that kind of a model but you need to understand from the text that is what's going on here
41:40
the Lord is pre configuring his death his salvation that he is bringing
41:47
through his death and he's gonna do it on the very day where he implements this
41:52
okay the next thing we see is he takes bread and he takes bread now again I
41:59
already gave you a precursor here this is unleavened bread there would be no
42:04
other bread at a passover meal the jews would never do that because again there
42:09
the penalty for that is being cut off from your people this is unleavened bread and it figures
42:15
Christ the unleavened bread that we celebrate again the Jews don't even
42:20
understand why they do some of what they do but these were loafs of bread that were that were made they're different
42:27
than the crackers in fact the stuff here is much closer to what it probably looked like it would be a thicker almost
42:33
like a real loaf of bread just without yeast so it never Rises and puffs up so you have this this bread that is
42:40
unleavened and it's one loaf and it's cut into pieces or broken by hand most
42:47
the time I think they were breaking it which is why we call that breaking bread they took the one loaf and broke a piece
42:52
off and ate it okay so that's what's that's what's happening here with the bread but this bread in ancient Israel
42:58
was roasted over an open fire and so it was it was on a grill of source similar
43:04
to what we do so it has stripes on it because of the grilling and then they
43:09
pierce it to they they pierce the bread to make it cook evenly and that you know
43:14
when you pierce food what it's effective they did the same thing they have no
43:20
idea why they had it has stripes they have no idea why it has piercings I bet
43:25
every one of you who knows the New Testament can tell me why it has stripes and it has piercings because Jesus had
43:32
stripes and piercing think of his beatings and crucifixion stripes and
43:38
piercing and that bread models that everything about this Passover meal
43:43
figures Christ but the Jews don't even understand it I'm talking about worth
43:49
the doc's Jews who don't believe Jesus is Messiah Messianic Jews absolutely in fact I learned most of this from
43:55
Messianic Jews teaching this stuff Zola Levitt and guys like that over the years
44:01
Arnold's fuckton bomb I mean Alfred edersheim if you guys very old name
44:08
absolutely these people taught the Messianic nature of these things to the
44:13
church what much of the church doesn't even know so let's keep going
44:20
for turn with me to first Corinthians chapter 10 first Corinthians chapter 10
44:27
and the way I've organized this is to show you the history and the in the book of Exodus I wanted to show you the
44:32
implementation of it in the Gospel with Jesus and then I wanted to take you to the Pauline epistles first Corinthians
44:40
specifically so that we could look at the meaning and the institution of this in the Apostolic period under the
44:47
apostles okay so we're in 1st Corinthians 10 we're only gonna read two
44:54
verses here look at verse 16 the cup of blessing which we bless is it not the
44:59
communion of the blood of Christ the bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ for we
45:06
though many are one bread and one body for we all partake of that one bread so
45:14
when we look at this we see this word communion in here and that word is used
45:20
many times in in the church some people call this communion some people call it the Lord's Supper it both are okay in
45:28
the greek the word that's underlying that is a word called Koinonia have you
45:33
guys heard that word before Koinonia it means fellowship it means fellowship our sharing the whole idea is
45:41
coming together in a fellowship and a sharing of the body in the blood of
45:47
Christ that's what that's what I'm saying it said at the beginning is this
45:52
whole thing that he's doing is trying to pull together and unify the body of
45:58
Christ in in two main factors his body
46:03
that not only he gay for us right and and was bruised and
46:09
broken and striped and pierced but also the unification of his body the church
46:15
here and then the blood of Christ which actually pays for our sin this is what
46:24
Christ has done and and this is what we should be unified in the body and blood
46:29
of Christ this is paramount to the Christian Church and if we're gonna have unity in
46:35
the body of Christ it better be over the gospel if you're unifying and Christian
46:42
religious works whatever you want to call it with people who have a different gospel a different body and blood of
46:50
Christ or the fact that Christ isn't even necessary at all you're doing it wrong we have unity in who Christ is and
47:00
what he's done for us this is what the Lord's Supper helps us to do and to continuously do draw us back this
47:10
fellowship notice that though we are many and most of in your heads hopefully
47:15
you're you're hearing Paul's other words about the body with its eye and its hands and all of its parts coming
47:22
together and making one unified body everyone having separate functions or we
47:28
could talk about the vine we've spoken of a couple weeks ago from John 15 that vine right or hear the bread the bread
47:37
it's one body it's one vine it's one loaf and who is that
47:44
it's Christ it's the body of Christ coming together in unity this is what he
47:51
what he wants I won't turn to read it but just write it down John 17 Jesus
47:56
says a prayer there that is amazing to me he prays for all believers to be one
48:04
as he and the father are one it's it's an amazing prayer you have the Son of
48:11
God before going to the cross praying to the father that he will unify those in
48:18
his body the church those that God has given to him into one faithful loaf one faithful
48:27
vine one faithful body of Christ unified together
48:33
is there any schism at all in the Godhead we believe biblically in a
48:38
triune God don't we Father Son and Holy Spirit is there any division whatsoever between them
48:43
absolutely not should there be any division between us absolutely not
48:51
Jesus has prayed that we would be unified flip over to 1st Corinthians 11
48:56
we're gonna start in verse 17 and we're getting very close to the end we're gonna read this passage talk about a few
49:02
things and then we're gonna move into the observance ok verse 17 now in giving
49:07
these instructions I do not praise you since you come together not for the better but for the worse for first of
49:14
all when you come together as a church I hear and there are divisions among you and in part I believe it for there must
49:20
also be factions among you that those who are approved may be recognized among you don't take that as meaning you
49:26
should be contentious and create a faction in the church what he means is when outsiders and unbelievers and
49:33
people like that come in they create factions that show the real Christians
49:38
to be approved okay not that you and I should be dividing the church don't read that incorrectly verse 20 therefore when
49:46
you come together in one place it is not to eat the Lord's Supper for in eating each one takes his own supper ahead of
49:53
others and one is hungry and one and another is drunk what and notice that exclamation point in the New King James
49:58
what do you not have houses to eat and drink in or do you despise the Church of
50:04
God and shame those who have nothing what shall I say to you shall I praise you and this I do not praise you
50:11
remember these are Paul's words and notice how pastoral they are how pastoral these instructions are here for
50:19
I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which he was
50:24
betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and said hey II this is my body which is broken for
50:31
you do this in remembrance of me in the same manner he also took the cup after
50:37
supper saying this cup is the new covenant in my blood this do as often as you drink it in
50:43
remembrance of me for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you
50:48
proclaim the Lord's death till he comes there I want I want to pause there for a
50:53
second because I want to go back to something I said earlier I think I've glossed over the most important part of
50:59
cup number two and it just hit me the plagues the judgment the wrath of God
51:06
Jesus actually didn't mention that most likely because he is going to take the
51:12
punishment for sin I I don't want to miss that I didn't want to gloss over it
51:17
because I I in my preparation I I had that down here and I skipped right over the primary point of the cup of plagues
51:25
he will personally take that one so there's no reason to have it listed in
51:30
the text you and I will not suffer for our own sin if we're in Christ so notice
51:36
that when you're preaching or when you're speaking publicly you can gloss right over something that's very important but I didn't want
51:42
to leave that because that's an important point it's the most important point from that passage understand that
51:50
Christ will take that that cup of plagues is going to be on him he will suffer that alone and if you are in
51:57
Christ and you have been healed from your sins it's because of the word Christ did let's keep going verse 27
52:06
therefore whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the
52:12
body and blood of the Lord but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of
52:17
the bread and drink of the cup for he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to
52:24
himself not discerning the Lord's body for this reason many are weak and sick
52:30
among you and many sleep for if we would judge ourselves and we would not be
52:35
judged but when we but when we are judged we are chastened by the Lord that we may not be condemned with
52:41
world therefore my brother and when you come together to eat wait for one another but if anyone is hungry
52:48
let him eat at home lest you come together for judgement and the rest I will set in order when I come and again
52:55
this is pastoral instruction from Paul and let's let's look at it look at a couple of these things the very first
53:03
part of this he is very harsh with them and the reason is they had here's what
53:09
was happening just just so you get the background of what's going on in that text because again it may be confusing
53:14
to you what do they mean by one's eating and then another isn't well in that culture and it's very similar in ours if
53:21
we were doing this regularly say in the evening on a regular night like when everyone works the wealthy would almost
53:28
always be the first to show up they either own their own businesses or run their own things or they have the most
53:34
flexibility in the jobs they have their managers and supervisors and so they have a lot more flexibility than other
53:41
people so they would show up and because of their station and their wealth and their money they would bring the best
53:47
food but they would consume it and eat it before the next set of people would arrive the next set of people to show up
53:54
would be like you and I most of us some of you may be wealthy I don't know but like most of us the middle-class we
54:01
would show up and we I like the way that da Carson says this they would bring the
54:06
chicken sandwiches you know we would bring the regular people food we would bring that food and but then of course
54:12
we would consume it and then last of all who would show up well the slaves or the
54:18
poorest the people who had to work and they couldn't leave their posts through their job or you know they didn't have
54:24
the opportunity they had to clean the Masters house and finish his work and make him dinner before they could arrive
54:29
to take fellowship with the rest of the body of Christ and guess what
54:34
could the poor take the Masters food and just bring it to the fellowship or the slave could he take from the Masters
54:41
cabinet and take that - probably not most likely not and so they would show
54:47
up with nothing and then all of a sudden here's what you have you have well-fed wealthy people
54:53
pretty well fed middle class people and the poor or the slave
54:58
having nothing and so because again they were they weren't just doing this as a
55:05
like we do kind of at the end of a service or maybe on a Sunday night they were having a full fellowship a
55:11
gathering of the body together and and honestly church should be that church
55:16
should be that it doesn't have to be the rigid way we do church today it should
55:23
be much more of a fellowship and a family and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the way we're doing Church today don't please don't
55:29
misunderstand I just mean the original ideas of the body of Christ are a family
55:34
they are one and unified but if you show up at these fellowships and you do all
55:40
your own things and you don't think anything about the the poor people who are gonna show up later in that fellowship and you've eaten everything
55:47
and you know you've already had all the real fellowship they're showing up and not getting fed and they're showing up
55:52
not experiencing the same thing that you are and Paul is being very again I'm
55:57
just gonna say pastoral here he's correcting them harshly because of their
56:03
bad behavior let's not be those type of people let's make sure that everybody in
56:09
the body of Christ has an equal share an opportunity okay now we can't change
56:15
everybody's life situation that's got in God's hands but we can definitely make
56:20
them a full on part of the body of Christ and meet their needs and help them and make them a part of the
56:26
fellowship okay it's very critical then as we move on Paul received this
56:33
instruction from the Lord notice verse 23 he's not making this up and again we
56:39
read this right out of the gospel the very words he quotes we just read them in the thin Luke didn't we
56:44
Paul received this not only in the Word of God but I also believe directly from the Lord these are commands of God this
56:53
is important this isn't Paul just making something up he clarifies those things when he does that doesn't he he'll say
57:00
that he'll say that this isn't a command from the Lord but this is something that I are the church's say you know he'll
57:06
say something like that not a command from the Lord he distinguishes the two this was received from the Lord verse 24
57:13
said and this gets to the heart and the point of how we do this this is a
57:19
remembrance of what Christ has done through his sacrifice on the cross the
57:24
body of Christ being crucified verse 25 this is a remembrance of the shed blood
57:30
of Christ atoning for our sin the blood of Christ being spilled paying for sin
57:35
establishing the text says the New Covenant in his blood
57:43
next thing verse 26 if you're trying to understand what the Lord's Supper is and
57:48
why it's important and what it means take it straight from the text look at verse 26 this is a proclamation of our
57:56
Lord's death until he comes in his kingdom okay so it's a remembrance of
58:04
the body it's a remembrance of the blood it is the remembrance of the New Covenant that
58:09
Jesus is established and all the things associated with that salvation freedom from sin all of it unification in the
58:16
body but it's also a proclamation of the death of Christ until he comes right
58:22
from the text and that last bit 27 through 34 these are warnings and I want
58:29
to do this I'll do this right from here and then I'll step down and we can observe the Lord's Supper but I want to
58:34
do the warning part right here it's part of the sermon but take heed how you or
58:42
if you take the Lord's Supper there are warnings here to do it in a worthy
58:47
manner not an unworthy manner now you may be asking what does that mean first
58:53
and foremost let me be very clear about this if you are not a believer please do
59:00
not partake in the Lord's Supper if you have not professed faith in Christ and
59:07
have not been in dwelt with His Holy Spirit do not take this this is
59:13
something for the body of Christ you are absolutely welcome to observe us doing
59:18
it I don't mind that at all but don't or take if you are not a converted
59:24
Christian okay that's warning number one that you need to think about and let me read you why
59:30
because again I know the text said it but let me just put it all in a little summary here you you are if an unworthy
59:38
manner means you are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord you could bring judgment to yourself
59:44
possible weakness possible sickness or potentially even death for doing this in
59:51
an unworthy manner that's what the text said I didn't make that up reread the verses don't do this in an unworthy
59:58
manner unbelievers the next thing are you an active member serving in the body
1:00:08
of Christ I don't necessarily just mean here anywhere are you an active
1:00:13
plugged-in member of the body of Christ if you are not you're breaking the unity
1:00:20
that is supposed to be here in this supper so think very carefully before
1:00:26
you observe the Lord's Supper if you're not an active member of the body of Christ okay if you think you're the one
1:00:33
person who can be separated from the body that branch fallen on the ground down here and still be okay with the
1:00:39
Lord no you need to be part of the body part of that vine part of this loaf you
1:00:46
need to be active and being nourished and sustained from the Lord and from his
1:00:52
church okay have you committed
1:00:57
unrepentant sin if you are harboring or living in a lifestyle of sin or
1:01:04
harboring unrepentant sin do not take this repent of that immediately and then
1:01:11
observe you know that repentance can happen in your heart and most likely most of the time that that leads me to
1:01:18
the next thing are you living in any practices of sin regularly that you know
1:01:24
of if you're living a lifestyle and practice of sin in general and you know
1:01:30
it don't take of this cleanse that sin out of your life
1:01:35
you do this okay are you holding a grudge against somebody in the body of
1:01:42
Christ is there division among you if you are don't take this those warnings
1:01:50
are to the body you get that right those warnings are to the body they aren't to
1:01:58
unbelievers those warnings and those punishments that's two people in the
1:02:05
body doing this unworthily I don't know if that's a word but you get my point
1:02:13
and again I already said that so if you answer yes to any one of those please don't partake please get your situation
1:02:21
in your life right with the Lord and with the body of Christ and reconcile those divisions and then then absolutely
1:02:27
be part of this alright let's move into a time let me close us with a word of
1:02:34
Prayer here but then we're going to go into the actual observance of the Lord's Supper and I've already asked Tom and
1:02:41
Mike to come forward and help me with this so to administer this with me let's try
1:02:48
Heavenly Father we thank you again for your word and how potent it is how sharp
1:02:54
it is sharper than any two-edged sword God it cuts right to the heart right to
1:02:59
the intent of our hearts father help us to see the body of Christ as a unified
1:03:08
whole and not some fractured divisions let us partake of the Lord's Supper in
1:03:15
true healthy faithfulness and unity God
1:03:21
give to us wisdom that we might examine ourselves give to us a boldness to
1:03:27
confront sin in our lives and even gently in other people's lives
1:03:33
father we long for you to be glorified we pray all this in the name of Jesus
1:03:40
[Music] you
